Why Does Your Yarn Keep Tangling? (And the Loop Lock as a Solution) | Loopedly

It feels like we spend more time untangling yarn than actually crocheting or knitting. This hobby has become two parts untangling and one part actually knitting or crocheting, making those tangles one of the most frustrating parts of working with yarn, and somehow they always seem to happen at the worst possible moment. You’re five minutes into the project you've been thinking about all day, and… a knot of tangled yarn the size of your fist stares right back at you. What causes this, and how can we stop it?

The Real Reasons Your Yarn Gets Tangled

1. Loose Ends Mean Trouble
When the tail end of your yarn isn’t secured and is just hanging out and about, it can lose itself the skein or wrap around other strands, hence the tangling, especially if you're carrying your yarn in a bag or storing it in a bin or area with other skeins of yarn. Even a small tug or movement can cause the entire skein to traverse into chaos. That’s why it is recommended that the tail ends of your yarn are always secured. (Loop Lock)

2. Skeins Shift Around
Yarn skeins are soft, separate, and the quite literal opposite of rigid, which is great for crafting… but not so great for staying organized. When they roll, shift, or compress, even minorly or daily, the yarn can pull unevenly, causing loops to tighten and tangle. Since yarn skeins have so many threads and strands that are often somewhat loose, any movement can cause the threads to further loosen, tighten, or ‘fall off’ the skein, resulting in a complete mess.

3. Overhandling or Storage Issues
Similar to the previous cause, every time you touch or move your skein, it’s a chance for things to shift out of place. Toss it in a tote bag without securing it? Expect knots; they will be there. Store it on a crowded shelf? Prepare for it to look like the yarn monster vomited everywhere, otherwise known as the ‘Yarn Vomit Phenomenon’. We've all seen it; a tangled blob of yarn guts, and it’s almost always a sign the yarn tail wasn’t properly secured.

The Simple Fix: The Loop Lock

That’s where the Loop Lock comes in. This small, clip-on tool is designed to secure the loose end of your yarn so it stays exactly where you want it to; outside the skein in an easily accessible area, not concealed or wrapped around itself.

It’s a soft-grip clip that gently holds your yarn without damaging it. All you have to do is clip the tail end of the yarn to a few more strands on the skein, and tuck the tail end to the arm of the clip. It’s that easy! The Loop Lock will stay put whether your yarn is in motion and you’re crocheting on the go or if it’s sitting in storage.

Bonus: You can even use the Loop Lock as a stitch marker!

The result:

Why Crafters Love It:

  • No more tangles while traveling or storing yarn

  • Keeps your project bag neat and stress-free

  • Works many yarn weights and skein sizes

  • Easy to use, even mid-project and for projects

  • Can be used as a stitch marker

So the next time you’re wondering why your yarn keeps turning into a mess, it’s not you. It’s the lack of a Loop Lock. Secure your skeins, protect your peace, and get back to doing what you love – crafting. Because crafting is supposed to be relaxing.
